Bias-free driven ion assisted photoelectrochemical system for sustainable wastewater treatment - Open Access
Photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems have emerged as a prominent renewable energy-based technology for wastewater treatment, offering sustainable advantages such as eliminating dependence on fossil fuels or grid electricity compared to traditional electrochemical treatment methods. However, previous PEC systems often overlook the potential of ions present in wastewater as an alternative to externally applied bias voltage for enhancing carrier separation efficiency. Here we report a bias-free driven ion assisted photoelectrochemical (IAPEC) system by integration of an electron-ion acceptor cathode, which leverages its fast ion-electron coupling capability to significantly enhance the separation of electrons and holes at the photoanode. Exploring the potential of standalone and tandem solar cells with Sb2S3 and Sb2Se3 absorbers: a simulation study - Open Access
Thin-film antimony chalcogenide binary compounds are potential candidates for efficient and low-cost photovoltaic absorbers. This study investigates the performance of Sb2S3 and Sb2Se3 as photovoltaic absorbers, aiming to optimize their efficiency. The standalone Sb2S3 and Sb2Se3 sub-cells are analyzed using SCAPS-1D simulations, and then a tandem structure with Sb2S3 as the top-cell absorber and Sb2Se3 as the bottom-cell absorber is designed, using the filtered spectrum and the current matching technique. Enhancing solar spectrum utilization in photosynthesis: exploring exciton and site energy shifts as key mechanisms - Open Access
Photosynthesis is a critical process that harnesses solar energy to sustain life across Earth's intricate ecosystems. Central to this phenomenon is nuanced adaptation to a spectrum spanning approximately from 300 nm to nearly 1100 nm of solar irradiation, a trait enabling plants, algae, and phototrophic bacteria to flourish in their respective ecological niches. While the Sun’s thermal radiance and the Earth’s atmospheric translucence naturally constrain the ultraviolet extent of this range, a comprehension of how to optimize the utilization of near-infrared light has remained an enduring pursuit. Smart home energy management and power trading optimization using an enhanced manta ray foraging optimization - Open Access
This paper proposes a plan to manage energy consumption in residential areas using the demand response method, which allows electricity users to contribute to the reliability of the power system by controlling their usage. Due to the growing population, the residential sector consumes a significant amount of energy, and the objectives of this study are to lower electricity costs and the peak to average ratio, as well as reduce the amount of imported electricity from the grid. The study aims to maximize profit by properly utilizing renewable energy sources and addressing energy trading. Read more…

Ambient Light Harvesting Heads IndoorsSmart home energy management and power trading optimization using an enhanced manta ray foraging optimization
“What the world needs now is to expand the scope of energy harvesting” by tapping indoor ambient light sources, said Matthias Kauer, CEO and co-founder of Lightricity (Oxford, U.K.). “We have this proliferation of battery-powered devices for industrial automation, building automation, etc. They require a solar cell with high efficiency at all light levels, down to very low light levels. The thing with light harvesting is that, in most cases, you don’t have control over the environment.” Read More…
Emerging applications of tough ionogels
Ionogels are crosslinked networks—typically polymeric networks—swollen with ionic liquids. The unique properties of ionogels, such as nonvolatility, ionic conductivity, nonflammability, and high thermal and electrochemical stability, make them promising for a variety of applications. Examples include sensors, adhesives, energy storage devices, and ionotronics. While many ionogels require complex syntheses and suffer from poor mechanical properties, simpler strategies are emerging to produce tough ionogels, thereby improving the durability, enabling 3D printing, and broadening the application space of ionogels. Effects of different manufacturing techniques on the performance of planar antennas
This study investigates antenna performance based on its manufacturing process. Two types of planar antennas are manufactured on FR-4 dielectric using three different techniques: traditional lithography, laser ablation, and the novel SSAIL (selective surface activation by laser) technique. Various characteristics, such as reflection coefficient, gain, half-power beamwidth, and surface conductivity, are measured to compare the results. Read More….

A new effective hybrid energy harvesting method developed to gather waste energy
When a car engine is started, there is vibration on the hood of the car, as well as a rise in its surface temperature, of up to 60 degrees Celsius. This, according to scientists, is wasted energy and they are now looking to develop technology to harvest that energy. Until recently, energy from vibrations and heat were measured separately, and not deemed efficient enough to be a power source.
But a team of Korean researchers have now succeeded in designing a hybrid energy harvester that combines piezoelectricity and thermoelectricity, resulting in higher final power generation. Attaching a brass plate to the surface of the heated area increases available thermoelectricity. The brass cantilever creates additional energy as its unattached end vibrates. This is the piezoelectricity. And the resulting amplified energy from both the heat and vibration is nearly two-fold.
Energy Harvesting Pavements: Generating Power from Foot Traffic or Vehicles
Energy harvesting pavements revolutionize infrastructure by converting foot traffic and vehicular movement into electricity. Using technologies like piezoelectric materials and kinetic_energy systems, these pavements capture kinetic energy, generating power as people walk or vehicles pass over them. From sidewalks to highways, they offer sustainable solutions, powering streetlights, buildings, and more. These innovative pavements embody a future where daily movement contributes to a cleaner, renewable energy landscape, transforming our surroundings into sources of power for a brighter tomorrow.
