Bond engineering of molecular ferroelectrics renders soft and high-performance piezoelectric energy harvesting materials. Piezoelectrics are materials that exhibit no inversion symmetric crystal structure and thus enables the conversion between mechanical and electric energy. In addition to their applications as actuator, transducer and sensor1,2, they are also proposed for energy harvester and new venues in soft electronics such as soft robots, electronic skins, and biomedical devices3,4,5. Large harvested energy with non-linear pyroelectric modules. Energy harvesting with pyroelectric materials requires the cycling of temperature with time, in contrast to the spatial temperature gradient needed for thermoelectric materials. This implies thermodynamic cycles, which are best described by entropy (S)–temperature (T) diagrams. Figure 1a shows the typical S–T diagram of a non-linear pyroelectric (NLP) material exhibiting a phase transition representative of the ferroelectric–paraelectric electric-field-driven phase transition in lead scandium tantalate (PST)8. To carry out this ambitious project, we have raised €5.5 million from the Banque des territoires, on behalf of the French government as part of the Territoires d’innovation program of the France 2030 plan, from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes sovereign wealth fund, and from semiconductor manufacturer Semtech.
